What Benefit Will I Get From a Safety Audit or Inspection
There are 2 factors that need to be assessed to understanding how safety is managed and promoted within a workplace; the safety management system and the environment, activities and attitude out in the workplace.
The Safety Inspection.
Covers the physical elements of a workplace for example the work activities, workplace environment, safety signage, machinery guarding, equipment operating procedures etc. If the business does not have a safety management system in place then the inspection may be the only assessment that is required to measure performance in the first instance.

The Safety Audit.
The Safety Audit investigates the structure of the safety management system and the elements of documentation, training, consultation and operational effectiveness of the OHS system through all levels of the business. The audit involves tracking the paper trail and interviews with selected management and staff, testing the application of the management system and reporting on the process performance.
OHS Benchmarking
The purpose of an inspection and or audit by a Safety Advisor is to provide a benchmark measurement of your OHS capabilities at a particular point in time. This will be used to create an action schedule, focusing on priority safety issues and to be referred to when measuring the businesses ongoing performance, highlighting the effectiveness of the initiatives introduced into the business. This is why the safety audit and inspections are used as the first step in the “5 steps to compliance” program.
