Are Your Farm Safety Activities up to Scratch?
The continuing changes to legislation, codes of practice and removal of farming OHS exemptions is changing the farm safety landscape. There is no doubt farmers need to place more emphasis on developing safety management systems and practices within the organisation to ensure they are covering their duty of care.
If you don’t have a farm safety program on your property, or you know your current activities are short of the mark, then you need to take action to begin a program to eliminate your family and workers exposure to workplace hazards and risk.

Farm Safety, How much is Enough?
Obviously this is a very contentious issue between legislators, enforces and farmers. The legislation focuses on elimination of hazards in the workplace and have specified a range of activities that can be utilised to achieve this. But these are a general scope and don’t necessarily easily translate to a farm that is isolated and has limited resources to manage safety.
To help manage farm safety better, there are a number of codes of practice, Australian Standards and reasonable well documented fact sheets available to assist the safety activities you undertake to ensure you’re heading in the right direction and utilising best practice.
Because a farm with all of its equipment and unforgiving work environment elements, you need to pay particular attention to your safety duty of care and manage your workplace to best practice for yourself, your workers and your family.
